How to get started with Second Life at Middlesex University


Minimum specs for your computer


Your computer must meet minimum requirements, or you may not be able to successfully participate in Second Life. You will also need broadband internet connection.

Download the Second Life software to your computer


Got to: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/?lang=en-US
You will need to have admin rights to your computer to be able to install new software. You can request this from CCSS by email them at CCSSAutomail@mdx.ac.uk. Your email’s subject line must start as New Log: txt

Create a Second Life account


  1. Go to : http://secondlife.com/
  2. Click on Join now
  3. Enter your real life contact details
  4. Enter the details of your avatar (Select carefully. It is case sensitive and you won’t be able to change it afterwards)
  5. Select the look of your avatar (you will be able to change this later on)When your registration is complete a confirmation email is sent to you.
  6. Click on the link provided in the email to activate your account.You are now ready to log on.

Log on to Second Life


  1. Open Second Life on your computer.
  2. Enter the name you have chose for your avatar (case sensitive)
  3. Enter your password
  4. When you log on for the first time, you find yourself on the Orientation Island.
  5. Use the arrow keys on your computer to move around your avatar.Right-click on objects to bring a up different menu options, e.g. Right-click on a chair and chose the sit here option

Visit the Middlesex University Island


At the moment access to the official Middlesex island is restricted to registered visitors only.
Once you have created your avatar email David Westwood at d.westwood@mdx.ac.uk who will add you to the list of visitors to the Middlesex Island and you will be able to visit us by following this SLurl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Middlesex%20University/128/128/31
